Dreamland
Continuing her long-term exploration of the spectacle of commercial entertainment zones, Jane Dickson presents new evanescent nightscapes
of carnivals’ make-believe structures viewed from the top of a ferris
wheel. Painted on a synthetic deep blue felt produced for convention
booths, this series was begun at the peak of our economic bubble
reflecting the surreal zeitgeist of that moment’s “irrational
exuberance”, a moment when anything that glittered, even if we didn’t
understand what it was, felt irresistible, a time that now feels like a
distant dream of a perfection that never really was.
