The Jane Dickson and Charlie Ahearn Downtown Papers are available for research in the Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections, Cornell University Library. The archive comprises 38 linear feet of material, dating from 1974 to 2010. It documents the life and work of Jane Dickson and Charlie Ahearn, and their partnership, intertwined with the careers of their peers in the Downtown New York art scene of the 1970s and 1980s, and in the decades that followed.
Materials include manuscripts and correspondence related to Dickson's artistic practice and to the planning and production of Ahearn's films The Deadly Art of Survival (1979), Wild Style (1982) and Doin' Time In Times Square (1991), among other projects. The collection also contains documents related to the planning, production, and reception of several Colab (Collaborative Projects, Inc.) and Fashion Moda projects, including The Times Square Show and City Maze (both 1980); original artwork by Dickson, Ahearn, and others; slides and photographs; audio cassettes featuring interviews with artists and collaborators; typescripts and mimeographs; press materials, including clippings and interviews; and publicity materials such as posters, flyers, and exhibition cards.
The Papers include a significant library component consisting of 135 artist books and novels, 255 exhibition catalogs and advertisements, and 84 periodicals, many inscribed by Jane Dickson, Charlie Ahearn, Nan Goldin, Orshi Drozdik, Robin Kahn, Leo Golub and Nancy Spero, and others. Additional contributions come from Kiki Smith, Glenn O'Brien, David Wojnarowicz, Lynne Tillman, Patrick McGrath, Coleen Fitzgibbon, and Gary Indiana, among others. -
